Getting started

How do I add a dictionary?

Open the app and you will see the catalog of available dictionaries. Tap the one you need and it will be downloaded to your device. You can add as many dictionaries as you like and switch between them at any time.

Do I need an internet connection?

Only for downloading a dictionary the first time. After that, searching, reading and listening all work fully offline — on a plane, in the metro or abroad without roaming.

How do I switch to another dictionary?

Go back to the dictionary list from the app menu and select a different one. Your bookmarks, notes and history are kept separately for each dictionary.

Searching

I can't find a word I know exists

Try these in order:

1. Search the base form of the word (dictionaries list headwords, not every conjugated or declined form).
2. Use full-text search to look inside the definitions themselves, not just the headwords.
3. Browse by letter using the alphabet view to check the spelling.

Can I look up a word I copied elsewhere?

Yes. Copy a word in any app, then open TTdictionary — it will offer to look up the text in your clipboard.

Pronunciation doesn't play

Pronunciation uses the iOS text-to-speech voices. Check that your device is not on silent, that the volume is up, and that the voice for that language is installed under Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices. Some languages have no iOS voice available and cannot be spoken.

Saving and learning

Bookmarks, favorites and notes

Any entry can be bookmarked, marked as a favorite, or annotated with your own note. They appear on their own tabs so you can review them later.

Flashcards and quizzes

Words you save can be practised with flashcard training and quizzes, with statistics showing your progress over time.

Where is my data stored? Will I lose it?

Everything you create — bookmarks, notes, history, progress — is stored on your device only. It is included in your iPhone backup if you have iCloud or local backups enabled. Deleting the app deletes this data, so make a backup before removing the app.

Downloads and storage

A download failed or is stuck

Check your connection and make sure you have enough free storage, then try again. If a dictionary stays broken, delete it from the dictionary list and download it again.

How do I free up space?

Delete the dictionaries you no longer use from the dictionary list. You can download them again later at no cost.

I don't see a new dictionary that was announced

The catalog refreshes in the background. Close and reopen the app while connected to the internet, and the new dictionaries will appear.

Ads and privacy

Why does the app show ads?

TTdictionary is free and the dictionaries are large to prepare and host. Advertising covers that cost.

How do I control personalized ads?

When you first launch the app, iOS asks whether you allow tracking. You can change that answer at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. In Europe you can also revisit the ad-consent form from the app's settings. Refusing simply means you see non-personalized ads — the app itself works the same.

What data do you collect?

We do not collect your searches, notes or bookmarks — they never leave your device. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
